A Self-less Blessing...

I just have to share a very special blessing this week. In January, my husband and I had to switch his office with our bedroom...for purely technical reasons...so in a pinch for time, we did...I knew that I had my work cut out for me so figuring that I could make it until after school we didn't worry about changing the closet (which was used for storage in his office) You need to keep in mind here that we live in a 90+ year old home which makes us even lucky to have closets in our bedrooms...but we do...as small as they may be. In this old house you have to get very creative with storage. I don't have this all mastered yet but I am getting there. Anyway...we (my husband and I) decided that he would take the storage and closet in his new office (our old room) for his clothes and I would take the dresser and eventual closet in our new room (his old office)...my little drawers alone were just not cutting it and I have to admit, it was becoming discouraging and things were beginning to pile up in our room.

This brings me back to this past Friday...my lovely, self-less, generous daughter decided that she was going to tackle my bedroom for me as a gift. My girl, went upstairs and began cleaning out this closet...making several trips, arms loaded from upstairs to the basement all by herself. (Amazingly, she was able to pull it off) I was pre-occupied with things...my husband was at work in his office. This girl of mine was working fast and furious because I was none the wiser...at one point my husband walked in the room as he was going to hang room darkening blinds in there...all of the stuff from the closet was piled on the bed and Brittany said his eyes just looked huge( I am sure he was wondering how in the world she was going to accomplish this on her own). This didn't discourage my girl however...she managed to clean out my closet and move all of my clothes, purses and shoes to my new closet...in color schemes I might add. Then, grabbing her dad again they rearranged our bed and dresser to allow for more room...this is the smallest bedroom in the house.

A short time later (she worked very fast) she came down to get me...I don't even remember the reason she got me upstairs...but I opened the door...

I was simply floored! All the clutter that was beginning to stack up was gone. The blinds had been hung, my room looked roomy and clean, perfectly clean! She opened my closet door and in disbelief I saw all of my things so neatly put away. I am still in awe as I walk up there and glance over and over in our room.

What a total blessing my daughter gave me...what a gift. I now know what those people feel like when they have a home-makeover. I can now do my laundry and have a place to put everything...it hasn't been like this ever! I remain speechless. I am now excited to pick a paint color and a new bedspread.

So, thank you my dear, sweet Brittany...there are no words that can express the feelings in my heart!

Blessings,
Joyce Marie

  1. What a beautiful picture of a servants heart! And what fun!
Can't wait to see pictures of the finished product.

I feel your pain with the old house and the almost-non-existent closets. It's not easy to find room for everything. When we built the second bathroom/closet on to our very-small-bedroom, we were able to eliminate all dressers in our room. Our bedroom is very small, but without dressers taking up space, it now looks just right.

    Have a great day!

  2. What a sweet heart of a daughter you have! I can't wait to see some pictures of it. I have lived in two different 90 + years old homes, and yes closet space is almost non-existent.

  3. Where are the pictures? You have to take pictures. Too bad you don't have a before and after picture of both rooms.

That was so sweet of Brittany to do that for you. She knows how much you like surprises.
Enjoy your new room. Love ya!

  6. OH, my goodness!! Are our children just TOO alike, or what? I couldn't believe your story since almost the same thing happened here! I woke up in tears on Monday because my horrible bed was hurting my back so bad (which is infuriating since this bed is only 3 years old and cost a small fortune!) and I was just miserable. My oldest son said he was going to get another bed for me (it had belonged to my MIL and was in storage) and get it done that day so I could sleep and feel better. He did that, but then when moving it in, it was a smaller bed than our huge king, he decided that the room could be done even better and he proceeded to move everything around and set it up like a suite in a hotel. Like he didn't all ready have so much to do, but he did this for me. :) He is one of those people that is super, super organized (he didn't get this from me!) and he can also visualize things (again, not from me) and my bedroom is just amazing.

You have such a sweet daughter - it's such a sweet blessing when our children do these beautiful things for us. I know you're as blessed as I am. I agree - my room has never been better either. It's just such a pleasure, isn't it? I pinch myself.

Give that sweet girl a hug from me. She is just SO wonderful!!

    God bless you, my friend!

    Love, Julie
