Last night, ABC Family aired a new show...Pretty Little Liars. Brittany and I decided to give it a go and see what it was all about. Within the Pilot (first hour of the show) these are the things that I picked out. Underage drinking, pot smoking, shop lifting ( one girl stole a scarf, another stole a pair of sunglasses). Many "desperate house-wife" looking single women raising girls alone. The only family that had a father, was one whose daughter saw him kissing another woman in his car...so now his daughter is holding his secret. That was just the start.
One of the girls pretended to be older while meeting a handsome young guy in what looked like a bar...but this girl was only sixteen so I didn't get that!...later they were making out in the bathroom of the establishment...only to find out the next day that he was her new high school English Teacher. The young girl who had stolen the sunglasses...was caught on video tape...so, she was arrested...her mother "handled" it behind closed doors at the police station making a deal with the arresting detective who much later was led up the stairs in her house to "guarantee" that her daughter wouldn't be prosecuted. A kiss between two girls that was more than a kiss between friends...
I think that was it(isn't that enough?)...I believe this series is based on a book series...no wonder our youth struggle so. I really tried not to judge the show...during the whole program, my daughter and I kept looking at each other. Getting ready for bed later, all of these scenes kept playing in my head and I just had to post it here. I mentioned it to her and she said..."yeah, it had all the stuff we don't believe in in it." Yes, exactly.
I don't have to tell you...you already know that we now face a society where it has been so easy to take God out of everything. Young, impressionable girls watch this channel all the time. For the first time I was happy that I didn't have yet another show to ban my daughter from watching. How did we get here? How did our society change to be so opposite of what many of us still want. It is hard work keeping a family intact, under God. What happened to good, wholesome entertainment that we can walk away and allow our children to watch without having to worry that they have just been taught to do something that is wrong.
I am just appalled. Our country is in such a sorry state...the family is being attacked from all angles here. I really don't know what else to say...does this bother you too?
Joyce Marie
Yes Ma'am, it bothers me too.
ReplyDeleteWe get one tv station, NBC and have our shows that we watch, Jeopardy being our favorite.
America Has Got Talent is one that we watch, sometimes in horror. We mostly rent movies or check them out from the library. When Margaret was younger we thought when she became a teenager she could watch some pg13 movies.....well she is 16 and the pg13's are ridiculous. It takes us a long time to pick out a show that we think might be family friendly......then to come home and find that it isn't. We have gotten PG's before that had unnecessary language, etc., in it.
It is very frustrating.
I am very thankful our daughters appreciate and know the difference between what is acceptable and not.
Joyce Marie, I can't believe we even let these shows go on air. What do other countries think of us "great Americans" when this is all they see on t.v.??? And my goodness, I bet God is extremely sad as well.
ReplyDeleteI am a girl that grew up on the Cosby show, Silver Spoons, etc that had a message that can be learned. I think there needs to be more pure things on t.v. and let's see how our society changes rather than letting our society change the kind of shows that air.
I simply don't watch t.v. unless it is Food Network or Weather Channel. We have cable t.v. and I don't even watch half of the channels.
God had put on my heart earlier this year not to watch shows with sinful acts. I must say I enjoy my books more!
Yes, it does bother us...very much!
ReplyDeleteShows like these is what prompted my husband and I to give up television completely. My boys do not watch those shows. But yes, the culture of today is not about families, but about doing what makes everyone feel good.
Just to echo what everyone else is saying - it's really not worth watching tv anymore. As much as some preach against cable, we pay for cable so we will have choices that are half-way decent. We have found that the regular networks are pure trash.
ReplyDeleteNow - about the FlyLady stuff.....YAY! I'm so glad you want to get on board! It has made a huge difference in my life in just 3 days. I feel like I can think straight and don't feel like I'm going in 20 different directions.
Later today or tomorrow I will post about my Control Journal, in case you want to attempt that sometime soon.
Let me know what I can do to help:)
Love ya too!
Debbie
My girls found this show: Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging on some channel. I watched a little of it with them and then said NO! I'm pretty sure that I will have to block this channel, because they have already said that they like it. I've blocked so many channels now, that we hardly have anything to watch. My girls started out watching The Secret Life of the American Teenager and then I put a stop to that. It's the same kind of show as the one you mentioned. I'm glad that my girls hasn't found that one yet.
ReplyDeleteIt bothers me a lot, and my heart is very grieved on whats happening to us as a society. This is when we should take the stand Noah did in his generation. It appears that unless we have a great revival in this land we will continue to face these things.
ReplyDeleteWe gave up on tv including the evening news, when Anna was very small and could understand even the evening news.
We live in a society which worships self, so everything on TV is about "Me" when we centralize our being on "me" we also have the tendency to put others down because we are "it".
We like some cable channels like discovery, decorating and cooking....but for now we don't even subscribe to it.
Since I am late on this post and would like to respond on the newer one, I will continue what I was going say there ;)
Yes, I'm definitely bothered by this too, there's nothing but garbage on TV nowdays, so much perversion, bad language, etc. Satan is busy trying to destroy families as much as he can and this is just one way he can do it. We watch a limited amount of Foxnews, sometimes something on the Discovery or History Channel. On rare occassions, there may be a good classic movie to watch on TCM or Hallmark Channel. We used to watch stuff on TV Land (like the classic shows from the 1950's), but lately they've been showing some shows that are not appropriate. We rent from Netflix as well where we can pick and choose more appropriate shows to watch(we recently rented "Father Knows Best"). As I said, Satan is busy trying to destroy families...we must do all we can to fight.
